The Story of the Green Teddy Bear

Once there was a small green Teddy Bear. He lived with a boy in his room in the house in the city. Sometimes they would get out the other stuffed animals and have a tea party. They would sing songs together and the boy would take the Teddy Bear’s hands and make him dance. Day after day they would play together and have lots of fun in the room in the house in the city.

One day the boy’s mother had to go on a long trip. His grandmother came to take care of him and the green Teddy Bear. That night something happened that made the boy very sad. The green Teddy Bear had two pink button eyes. One of the pink button eyes had fallen off. This probably happened because they always played so hard together every day in the room in the house in the city. The little boy cried and cried and Grandma came in and said, “What’s wrong?”
He said, “My little green Teddy Bear has lost one of his pink eyes.”
The grandmother said, “Oh, that’s nothing to worry about. I can fix it.”
The little boy said, “Oh no! Only my mommy can fix the pink eye on my little green Teddy Bear.”
Grandma said, “Don’t be silly. I’ll go get a needle and thread right now and sew it back on.”
The little boy cried and screamed, “No, no! Don’t stick a needle in my little green Teddy Bear. Only my mommy can fix the pink eye that’s missing on my little green Teddy Bear.”
The Grandmother said, ”Well, all right. Your mother will be back tomorrow.”

The boy cried himself to sleep that night. Clutching the poor little green Teddy Bear with only one eye. But, as things will happen, the sun came up the next morning just as it had every other day in the boy’s short life so far. When he awoke, he found the little green Teddy Bear had both his eyes. He didn’t know how it happened. It must have been magic.

He woke up and ran to his grandmother. “Grandma, Grandma, Grandma! My little green Teddy Bear has both of his pink button eyes again.”

The grandmother smiled and winked and said, “Yes, I know. Your mother will be back this afternoon.”

For breakfast the little boy, the little green Teddy Bear and his grandmother had pancakes, strawberries and orange juice. For lunch they had peanut butter sandwiches and milk. And the little green Teddy Bear sat up at the table just as happy as he could be with TWO bright and shiny pink button eyes.

That afternoon the boy’s mother came home. He told her the whole story of the green Teddy Bear.
